Becoming a mother

Pregnancy felt like an in-between state – a journey that had yet to reach its destination. And as I walked this journey, I was experiencing myself change. Past experiences were coming back to me with fresh power and taking on new meanings.
⠀⠀
It felt strange to have a little person growing inside me, so connected and yet also, somehow, so far away. Who was I in this new body of mine? Who were they?
⠀⠀
Often, I felt alone with all these concerns and feelings. Unsure even how to put it into words, how to let my husband know what it was like to be transformed into a mother, mind, body and soul, while he seemed to just go on with his normal life. And without these words, it was difficult to plan for parenthood beyond just buying things.
⠀⠀
After I had children, I understood that we need to prepare for childbirth differently.
⠀⠀
We need to focus on how the birthing parent is feeling.
⠀⠀
We need to understand that all our life experiences that have gone into our adult selves, the good and the bad, can become very present in pregnancy.
⠀⠀
We need to honor the fact that, just as our bodies are changing, our identity is shifting forever – a process that can be both joyous and challenging - and in the seeds of this realization Resilient Birth sparked into life
